A thousand Bengalis marched to the Bangladesh High Commission last Sunday in protest against the reprosive regime of Sheikh Mujib. Speakers at a rally beforehand described the plight of the millions of workers and peasants who live in squalid conditions with oo prospect except imminent starvation.
Any attempts to protest against this situation are met with savage repression. Tere have been many pocical assassina tians, and workers on strike are frequenily; fired upon. Five thousand political prison ers aro now held in Bangladesh without trial.
Intimidation by the repime even астповверачии were au conacted Dy the Bangladesh High Commission, which threatened to refuse any extension to their passports if the demonstration was held. The High Commission also tele phoned militants in the provinces informing them that the demonstration had been cancelled.
Despite these atrempts at sahotage and intimedation, the organisers remained undererted. This demonstration was the first major action on the situation in pangaden ance moepcopcies and as one of the speakers pointed out, it was the beginning of the fight to bring down the regime of Sheikh Mujib on the way to building a socialist Bangladesh.
